Applying direct vs using a broker

Going direct to a lender means one application, one lender, one hard credit check. A broker like Lending Room flips that. One application, one soft check, access to the full panel.

Apply direct

Approaching one lender at a time

  • One application gets you one lender's offer, take it or leave it
  • Each application triggers a hard credit check that sits on your file
  • Multiple applications in a short window can pull your credit score down
  • No easy way to compare offers across lenders side by side
  • Specialist personal finance lenders often aren't accessible direct to consumers
  • No broker fee. Lender establishment fees and rate may vary

Who can apply

Are you eligible for a personal loan?

Most employed New Zealanders with a good credit history can apply. Here's what lenders on our panel look for.

  • 18 or over and a NZ citizen, resident or eligible visa holder Work visa holders can apply with 13+ months remaining on the visa.
  • Regular income you can show Employed, self-employed or a mix. Lenders want to see you can comfortably meet repayments.
  • A good credit history It doesn't need to be perfect, but lenders on our panel do look for a solid track record.

We can't help everyone. We don't accept applications from people on a benefit or WINZ support, in financial hardship, or seeking a payday loan.
Checking your eligibility uses a soft credit check only. It won't affect your credit score.

The guide

Personal loans in New Zealand: what to know before you borrow

A personal loan can be one of the simplest ways to fund a big purchase, consolidate debt or cover an unexpected cost. But the rate you're offered, whether the loan is secured, and how you apply all make a real difference to what you end up paying. Here's how it works in NZ.

What are personal loan rates in New Zealand?

Personal loan rates in NZ generally range from 8.99% to 29.95% p.a. (AIR). The lowest rates go to applicants with strong credit profiles on secured loans. Secured personal loans start from 8.99% p.a. and unsecured from 10.99% p.a. The rate you're actually offered depends on your credit profile, the loan amount, the term and whether you offer security. Nobody is guaranteed the headline rate, so treat advertised numbers as a starting point, not a promise.

Comparing the full cost of an offer, not just the headline rate, is what protects you.

Secured vs unsecured: what's the difference?

A secured personal loan is backed by an asset, usually a vehicle. Because the lender has security, the rate is typically lower and you may be able to borrow more. An unsecured loan isn't tied to an asset, so it carries a higher rate to reflect the added risk to the lender. If you have an asset you're comfortable using as security, a secured loan can bring your rate down, but make sure you understand what's at stake if repayments aren't met.

Soft check first, no score impact When you apply through Lending Room, we run a soft credit check to assess your options. It doesn't leave a mark on your file the way a direct application to multiple lenders would.

Should I apply direct or use a broker?

Applying direct means approaching one lender at a time, and each application usually triggers a hard credit check that sits on your file. Several hard checks in a short window can pull your score down. A broker like Lending Room flips that: one application, one soft credit check, and access to a panel of multiple vetted NZ lenders. We match you to the lender most likely to offer the best overall deal for your situation, rather than you guessing which one to try first.

How much does it cost to use Lending Room?

If your loan is funded, a broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 (GST inclusive) applies. Lender establishment fees of up to $450 may also apply, depending on the lender. Every fee is disclosed to you before you commit, so there are no surprises. We only get paid when you go ahead, which keeps our interest aligned with finding you a deal worth taking.

Borrow only what you can repay A longer term lowers your monthly repayment but increases the total interest you pay. Always check the total cost over the life of the loan, not just the monthly figure, before you sign.

Will applying affect my credit score?

No. Our initial assessment uses a soft credit check, which doesn't affect your credit score. A hard check only happens later, with your consent, once you choose to proceed with a specific lender's offer. This is one of the main advantages of going through a broker rather than applying to several lenders directly and collecting a hard check from each one. You can read more about how credit reporting works through bureaus like Centrix.

What protections do I have as a borrower?

Lenders and brokers in NZ are bound by the responsible lending principles in the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003. Section 9C sets out the lender responsibility principles, including making reasonable inquiries so the loan meets your requirements and that you can repay without substantial hardship. The Commerce Commission enforces these rules, and the Financial Markets Authority oversees financial services more broadly. For independent, government-backed guidance on borrowing, Sorted is a good place to start.

Make an informed decision

Compare your loan options with confidence

The lowest advertised rate doesn't always mean the lowest overall cost. Here's what to look for when comparing personal loans in New Zealand, and how to protect yourself before committing.

How to compare personal loan offers

The cheapest-looking rate isn't always the cheapest loan. When you compare offers, put four things side by side: the interest rate, the fees (including establishment and broker fees), the term, and the early repayment terms in case you want to clear the loan sooner.

01

Interest rate

Compare the annual interest rate and whether it's fixed or variable. Your rate depends on your credit profile, the loan amount, term and security.

02

Fees and charges

Include establishment fees, broker fees and any other applicable charges. A lower interest rate may not mean a cheaper loan once fees are included.

03

Loan term

A longer loan term generally reduces your regular repayment but increases the total interest paid. Compare the full repayment cost, not just the monthly amount.

04

Early repayment

Check whether you can make extra repayments or pay off your loan early, and whether any early repayment charges apply.

Look at the total amount repayable

A longer term lowers your repayment but adds interest. The simplest test is the total amount repayable over the life of the loan, because that one figure captures the rate, fees and term together.

We show you the full cost of your offer before you commit, so you can compare it properly with no pressure to proceed. You can also use our personal loan calculator to estimate repayments and see how a personal loan compares with a credit card. The calculator provides estimates and excludes fees, so check your actual offer for the total cost.

Planning for the unexpected

Protecting your repayments

Life doesn't always go to plan. Loan repayment insurance can help cover your repayments for a period if illness, injury or redundancy stops you working.

Lending Room is an authorised Autosure network partner, so we can talk you through cover options alongside your loan offer. Cover is optional and not a condition of your loan.

It's worth weighing against any cover you already have through work or your own policies before you decide.

Personal loan rates in NZ range from 8.99% to 29.95% p.a. (AIR). Secured personal loans start from 8.99% and unsecured from 10.99%. The lowest rates go to applicants with strong credit profiles on secured loans. Your actual rate depends on your credit profile, loan amount, term and whether the loan is secured.

A secured loan is backed by an asset such as a vehicle, which usually means a lower rate and the ability to borrow more. An unsecured loan isn't tied to an asset, so it carries a higher rate to reflect the added risk to the lender. Secured personal loans start from 8.99% p.a. and unsecured from 10.99% p.a.

No. Our initial assessment uses a soft credit check, which means no credit score impact from our check. A hard check only happens later, with your consent, once you choose to proceed with a specific lender's offer. This is a key advantage of using a broker instead of applying to several lenders directly.

Applying direct means one lender at a time, and each application usually triggers a hard credit check on your file. Lending Room is different: one application, one soft credit check, and access to a panel of multiple vetted NZ lenders. We match you to the lender most likely to offer the best overall deal for your situation.

If your loan is funded, a broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 (GST inclusive) applies. Lender establishment fees of up to $450 may also apply, depending on the lender. Every fee is disclosed to you before you commit. We only get paid when your loan goes ahead.

You can apply to borrow from $3,000 to $250,000 over a term of 6 to 84 months. The amount you're approved for depends on your income, expenses, credit profile and whether the loan is secured.

Most applicants hear back the same business day. Same-day funding is possible for applications approved before 12pm on business days. The application itself takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Yes. Several lenders on our panel work with visa holders. You'll generally need 13 or more months remaining on your work visa at the time you apply, plus regular NZ income you can show through payslips or bank statements.

Personal loans cover almost any legitimate purpose, including debt consolidation, a car, home renovation, medical or dental costs, and travel. Tell us your purpose when you apply and we match you to the right lender for it.

We don't accept applications from people on a benefit or WINZ support, in financial hardship, or seeking a payday loan. To apply you generally need to be 18 or over, a NZ citizen, resident or eligible visa holder, with regular income and a good credit history.

Yes. Most lenders let you make extra repayments or pay your loan off in full before the end of the term, which can save you interest. Some charge an early repayment fee, and the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act controls how that fee can be calculated. Terms differ between lenders, so we point them out before you sign. If clearing the loan early matters to you, tell us when you apply.

There's no single minimum score. Each lender on our panel sets its own criteria and looks at your whole credit history, not just the number, along with your income, expenses and existing debts. A solid record of on-time repayments opens up lower rates and more lender options. You can check your score for free with NZ's credit bureaus before you apply, and our guide explains how to check your credit score.

Yes. Several lenders on our panel work with self-employed applicants, including sole traders and contractors. Instead of payslips you'll usually provide recent bank statements, and some lenders ask for financial statements or your latest IR3 return. Lenders want to see income that's steady enough to meet repayments comfortably. Tell us how you're paid when you apply and we match you to lenders who suit your situation.

Yes. If you're paying a high rate or your situation has improved since you took out your current loan, refinancing may lower your rate or your repayments. The new lender pays out your existing loan and you repay them instead. Check whether your current loan has an early repayment fee first, because it affects the real saving. Our guide to refinancing a personal loan walks through it.

Most personal loans arranged through our panel have a fixed rate, so your repayment stays the same for the whole term and you know exactly when the loan ends. Some lenders also offer variable rates, which can move up or down over the term. Your offer will show the rate type clearly before you commit.

Talk to your lender as early as you can. If something you couldn't have seen coming, like illness, injury, losing your job or a relationship ending, makes repayments hard, the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act gives you the right to apply for a hardship variation. That could mean lower repayments or a longer term for a while. Lenders can't charge a fee for considering your application. For free, confidential budgeting help, contact MoneyTalks on 0800 345 123.
